Things were just dandy until he became shiny

posted 2006.12.29 Friday

Will Higgins of the Indianapolis Star reports:

Thelmon Green, the old man who for seven years has lived happily in a Chevy van in the 3800 block of North Keystone Avenue, is being evicted by the Marion County Health Department.

Sheryl Crum, who works for the department’s housing division, visited Green’s van on Thursday and pronounced the scene: "not a healthy place to live."

Green objected to Crum's ruling, but was resigned to it.  "I'll just find me another place," he said today.

...

Health officials learned of Green, who's either 93 or 86 (depending on whether you believe him or the government), through a Dec. 26 Indianapolis Star story, which described his unconventional yet fulfilling life: no income, many friends, and a huge social network of people in the neighborhood who look out for him and provide for him.

No income?  No address?  Such unhealthy, untaxable conditions!  Thank goodness for that heartwarming feature story; otherwise, "health officials" never would have found him...
