Today,
the government of the united states Of America invaded Somalia. That's not what the headlines will say. The headlines will say that there were "strikes" against "terrorists." Not only does this government no longer
declare war, it doesn't even
go to war anymore. It just strikes things. And sometimes those things aren't even national governments, since Somalia doesn't really have one, despite repeated attempts by outsiders to install them.
And so, while a
war weary populace was still recovering from its collective
Christmas hangover and sufficiently distracted by the death of a
non-elected chief executive, the Ethiopian government
launched an attack on the
stateless geographic region formerly known as Somalia (and still so indicated on maps). This was at least with the implicit support of the united states government ("U.S. say Islamists backed by al Qaeda") if not potential explicit, covert support. The reason for launching this attack on this "country" at this moment seems a bit vague in the popular press reports, but there are probably some hidden dots to be connected. Or maybe states just hate anarchy.
In addition to the
distortion of language mentioned above,
this scenario reeks of other Orwellian themes. Specifically, as
Justin Raimondo has pointed out, the united states government (and Ethiopia) are now backing the very warlords that they opposed back in the
Black Hawk Down days. By the way,
Lew Rockwell was about six months ahead of the news, unlike
Tom Friedman.
There are plenty of links to be followed on your part, and plenty of studying to be done my part, so we will pause in this story for now. But keep your
eyes closed and your mind open.
