When I saw that Musharraf had declared martial law in Pakistan, my mind immediately turned to Honest Abe. My classmate Ali lists the major actions taken: Constitution suspended, Supreme Court declares state of emergency illegal, troops enter Supreme Court and surround judges' homes, and media off the air. Follow the links in that last sentence; the Lincoln parallels are ominous (yes, even trying to arrest the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court).
But I realize this is a very serious situation in Pakistan and not to be made light of, so I didn't blog about it yesterday. It just seemed like a bit too much libertarian snark. But now, according to the NY Times, it appears that Musharraf is actually using Lincoln's actions as justification for his actions! The fact that Pakistan is a US "friend" in the War on Terror does not surprise me in the least.
